Wow – thank you all so much for following along with my holiday blanket journey! 🧢 I thought this beauty deserved a blog post all of its own, with all the details on how I made it, the inspiration behind the colours, and who I made it for. Let’s get stuck in…

Firstly, whilst on holiday in Northumberland, right next to Hadrian’s Wall, I decided to make a holiday blanket for my sister πŸ’– so she could share in the memories with us. She was sadly unable to join us due to her complex care needs, as she has MS.

There were eight of us and three dogs 🐾 on the holiday, and we stayed in a gorgeous farmhouse that had a separate games/cinema room and a hot tub with views of Hadrian’s Wall! 😍

When I was looking at the holiday house online beforehand, I was instantly struck by the amazing colours and eclectic dΓ©cor – and the lime green kitchen became my main inspiration (I mean, who has a lime green kitchen!? πŸ’š).

So, I decided to try and colour-match the house from the pictures to my wool stash and bring the whole lot with me! 🎨 Luckily, my brother-in-law had a van 🚐 so there was plenty of room to bring all my yarn along.

When we arrived, I was blown away by the vibrancy of the house – so many electric colours and quirky collectables (they definitely like Noddy! collectables everywhere). It was absolutely amazing! ✨ I got to work straight away, and my initial idea was to just make one granny square a day… but after wandering around the house, it quickly became clear that I’d need to do at least two squares a day as there were so many colours to capture!

You may have seen my daily updates on Instagram – I posted a few pics of what we were getting up to as well! πŸ“Έ

For the blanket, I used a 5.5mm hook with DK yarn from my stash – mostly Stylecraft Special DK, Yarnsmiths Create DK, and Hobbii Kind Feather DK. Each granny square had 7 rounds and measured about 16 x 16 cm. I worked out I’d need to make 24 squares for a decent-sized blanket for my sister.

I really wanted to finish the blanket whilst we were still on holiday so I could photograph it with the incredible dΓ©cor as a backdrop. Honestly, it was like a technicolour dream coat in house form – a total rainbow! 🌈🏑

Once I’d finished all the squares, I knew I wanted a neutral colour to join them, and I settled on a light stone grey that matched the actual bricks of the house. 🧱 I used the join-as-you-go method, using double crochet (UK terms), and I managed to get all the squares joined in one day – a lovely chilled day at the house while some of the others went out exploring.

That evening I started the border and finished it the following evening – I kept it simple and finished with a round of crab stitch πŸ¦€ to give it a lovely neat edge.

✨ The finished blanket measured 119 cm x 83 cm! ✨

Now, the best part of all this was gifting the blanket to my sister. After not seeing her for two weeks, the first thing I did when we got home was go straight round to give it to her. πŸ’ She was having a bed day, but when I showed her the blanket, she absolutely loved it.

β€œWhich is your favourite colour, Amanda?” I asked.

β€œAll of them!” she replied. 🌈

Her cognitive function is impaired, so for her to smile and say that just made it all so worth it. πŸ₯Ή To see her happy was absolutely heartwarming. I mean – just look at her smile! She is the best sister and truly my world πŸ’•

Thank you so much again for all your support – your comments, likes, shares, and lovely messages meant everything to me. πŸ’¬πŸ«Ά I hope this inspires someone else to make their own holiday blanket to capture those beautiful memories forever! 🧢

Lastly, here are a few pictures of our holiday, the views, and all the little details we loved so much πŸ“·πŸŒ„πŸΎ

Lots of love,
