If you’re anything like me, the excitement of opening a yarn advent calendar each December never gets old. There’s something magical about unwrapping those little bundles of colour, each one bursting with possibility. But once the festive season ends and you’re left with a gorgeous collection of mini skeins, the big question is: what do you make with them?

That’s exactly what inspired two of my favourite designs: the Advent Drift Scarf and the Magic Moss Stitch Shawl. Both patterns were created with advent minis in mind – 24 joyful little 20g skeins just waiting to become something beautiful.

Advent Drift Scarf

The Advent Drift Scarf is a soft, flowing infinity scarf worked in the almond stitch. It uses 24 x 20g 4ply minis and highlights the subtle colour shifts in a calm and soothing way. The stitch gives a beautifully textured fabric with lovely drape, perfect for wrapping around your neck in cosy layers.

What I love most about this project is how relaxing it is to make. You can add just a few rows each evening as you unwind, watching the colours melt into one another. It’s beginner-friendly, rhythmic, and easy to pick up and put down. Whether you use a full advent set or leftover minis from your stash, it’s a great way to let those special yarns shine.

Magic Moss Stitch Shawl

The Magic Moss Stitch Shawl is a bigger take on my original moss stitch scarf, this time reimagined as a full-sized wrap. It also uses 24 x 20g 4ply minis and really allows the colours and textures of hand-dyed yarns to speak for themselves. The moss stitch gives it a timeless feel, simple, elegant, and full of texture.

This is the kind of project that feels comforting as you work it, and looks even better when worn. The finished shawl can be styled in so many ways and has that perfect wrap-around feel that makes it a go-to during cooler months.

The Yarn

For the Advent Drift Scarf I used the beautiful 2025 Advent Calendar set from @botanicalyarns. This stunning collection of hand-dyed 4ply mini skeins featured a soft tonal fade in earthy shades with the occasional gentle speckle, perfect for creating flowing transitions and texture-rich fabric. The yarn felt lovely to work with and brought a truly magical quality to both makes.

The Magic Moss Stitch Shawl was made using the 2025 Little Lika Yarn Advent Calendar, called A Very Austen Yuletide. Inspired by the wit, warmth, and elegance of Jane Austen’s world, this collection was full of soft, romantic tones that faded beautifully across the shawl. Each mini skein added charm and gentle drama, perfect for this comforting wrap design.

A Purpose for Every Mini

I also managed to make a smaller Magic Moss Stitch Scarf using the leftover yarn from my Advent Drift Scarf. It was such a satisfying bonus make and proof that those minis really do go a long way!
Both patterns were born from a desire to give those beautiful minis a purpose, something more than sitting in a basket or drawer waiting for the “perfect project.” Advent Drift and Magic Moss are about using what you love and letting the yarn tell the story.

So if you’re staring at your advent calendar leftovers (or treating yourself to a new one this year), these projects might be just what you’re looking for. Simple, soothing, colourful, and designed to make the most of every mini.

Happy stitching,
